I remember when he was a bright-faced, enthusiastic boy… always eager to climb the tallest tree, wrestle with his brother and throw a ball for our puppy. Energy and mischief, loyalty and sincerity were just some of his youthful traits that endeared him to all who knew him.

Not only that, but he seemed to have an emotional awareness beyond his years… an intuitive knowing and sensitivity to others that was both his strength and his vulnerability.

Then one regular Sunday evening, after months of struggle with this boy who had become an adult, I walked into his room to find him smoking pot. It was9pm, his younger siblings were lying in their beds in the adjacent rooms. My son looked at me through a haze of shame, my stunned expression giving way to realisation… the inability to get out of bed in the morning, the low motivation to get a job, the lacklustre skin and rising aggression… it all started to make sense.
